This Naples Optical Prints Set includes four finely handcoloured 18th‑century views of Naples, Italy (Napoli, Italia). Created after designs by Quilielm Baur and engraved by François Xav. Habermann around 1760, the prints were published by the Academie Imperiale d’Augsburg. These Vues d’Optique or Guckkastenblätter were designed for zograscopes, giving an impressive sense of depth and perspective.
The four titles are: ‘Vue du Place Grande à Neaple vers Orient’, ‘Vue du Mohle à Neaple, avec le nouveau Chateaux’, ‘Vue d’un Côté du Jardin Royale à Neaple’, and ‘Vue d’Arrivé des Vaisseaux apres l’Aille du Pallais Royale’. Each view captures lively scenes of the city’s port, palaces, gardens, and bustling piazzas, reflecting the grandeur of 18th‑century Naples.
Each image measures about 28.5 x 42 cm and remains in very good condition with bright, fresh colouring. The fine detail and vivid tones express Habermann’s mastery of architectural perspective and composition.

During the 18th century, mapmaking became more scientific and precise.
